Presented as part of the city-wide collaborative event, "Charlotte Celebrates its Celtic Traditions", Troubled: Photography, Film and Video from Northern Ireland brings together images of contemporary life in Northern Ireland.
This multipart exhibition responds to the nearly 30 years of sectarian conflict between Catholics and Protestants, known as the "troubles", and reflects "troubled" themes of uneasiness.
Mary McIntyre (born and lives in Northern Ireland) and Moira McIver (born in Scotland, lives in Northern Ireland) currently teach art at the University of Ulster in Belfast, while Belfast native
Paul Seawright (born in Northern Ireland, lives in Wales) currently teaches art at the University of Wales College, Newport. John Duncan (born and lives in Northern Ireland) is the editor of Source, Ireland's photographic review magazine.
Victor Sloan (born and lives in Northern Ireland) frequently exhibits his works throughout the UK and Europe, and England-based artists Caroline Molloy (born and lives in England) and Nigel Rolfe (born in Ireland, lives in England) completed bodies of work about Northern Ireland.
Troubled: Photography, Film and Video from Northern Ireland was supported by grants from the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, the North Carolina Arts Council, the British Council and the Arts Council of Ireland. Co-organized by the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, NC and The Light Factory.
